Research Achievements:
In our Laboratory, we have developed the technology for the culture of marine copepods such as Paracalanus parvus, Nannocalanus minor, Euterpina acutifrons¸ Nitocra affinis and Oithona rigida (Dioithona rigida) and tested their efficacy as live feed for larval production of commercial important fishes such as Asian seabass Lates calcarifer, Tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon, white leg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and ornamental fish Monodactylus argenteus.
We have developed the low cost culture technology for marine copepods such as Oithona rigida (Dioithona rigida) and Nitocra affinis for the first time in India in Marine Planktonology & Aquaculture Laboratory of Department of Marine Science, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Prof. K. Meena, Former Vice Chancellor of our University has launched the first distribution of marine copepods culture to Fish Culture Division of Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR), Chennai, and Marine Ornamental Fish Entrepreneurs (Mr. Vinothkanna and Mr. Karthick,), Karur, Tamil Nadu for pilot scale production on 22 September 2011. We also provide the pure culture of marine copepods to C.A.S. in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, Parangipettai, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (MPEDA), Sirkazhi, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Kochi Regional Centre, Kochi for pilot scale production and their application in fish larval production. Now, the marine copepod cultures are available only in our laboratory/Department/university for supply to fish farmers. No other institutes or universities having this marine copepods culture in the country. We developed this intensive culture technology for marine copepods with the financial support of Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India through extramural research project. In addition, we also developed the cultures for marine and freshwater microalgae, rotifers, different strains of Artemia, cladocerans, marine and freshwater copepods and chironomid larvae
